Everyone stands to benefit – so all turn to cycling

The #TurnToCycling initiative (in German: #aufsRadsetzen) aims to raise awareness for the many benefits of cycling and to show just how it can play a crucial role in the mobility transition. Bicycles are far more than just a means of transport. They are also an important economic and tourism factor for local businesses. At the same time, cycling promotes good health, helps to reduce noise and air pollution and traffic jams, and contributes to environmental protection.

At the start of the critical phase in the election marathon that began in June with the European elections and will be followed by several state and municipal elections in autumn and the federal elections next year, the ZIV has launched a new initiative together with companies from the German bicycle industry. The new #TurnToCycling initiative seeks to raise awareness among policymakers and the general public for cycling and calls on everyone to take to their bikes. All stakeholders from the bicycle industry are invited to share the many good reasons to cycle. The new website offers an overview of relevant topics, together with facts and figures and awareness raising materials to download and use for free.

Press release from 17.05.24 | aufsRadsetzen.de – ZIV launches new awareness raising campaign for the bicycle industry in time for the European and municipal elections

Better cycling policy has no political colour. Everyone benefits, hence we expect all political stakeholders to turn to cycling.
Burkhard Stork | CEO, ZIV
The initiative is being launched at a time when it is more difficult than ever for cycling and the mobility transition: In the face of inflation, wars and the climate crisis, necessary changes in the public sphere are increasingly being perceived as threats. Policymakers are acting with restraint accordingly: Funding is being cut and the mobility transition is being hampered or, in some cases, even reversed.

With its #TurnToCycling campaign, the bicycle industry is taking decisive action to counteract these developments. It is bringing together strong partners – both ZIV member companies in regions and municipalities all across Germany and national partners associations and organisations – to lend a new and urgently needed voice to promote cycling and the future potential of bicycles.

About the #TurnToCycling initiative
Countless partners are working together within the #TurnToCycling initiative to promote cycling in Germany. The aim is to raise awareness for the many benefits of cycling and to show the crucial role it can play in the mobility transition.
The initiative is supported by the ZIV and its partners from the Bike Nature Movement (the German initiative for mountain biking (DIMB) and the Mountain Bike Forum Germany), with additional support from companies from the bicycle industry.
Cycling in forests and nature
More than 62 million people in Germany seek and find recreation in forests, mainly on foot or bike. 16 million people in Germany use a mountain bike, making cycling in the great outdoors the most popular sport, offering opportunities for the economy and tourism as well as health benefits for the population. Together with its partners from the Bike Nature Movement and the bicycle industry, the ZIV is striving to ensure the considerate coexistence of cyclists, nature and other forest users.
Everyday cycling
Bicycles are key to the transition to sustainable and healthy mobility. Political decision-makers around the world are focusing heavily on cycling as an opportunity to make towns, cities and rural areas more resilient to crises and more liveable for inhabitants. We have joined forces with the bicycle industry to campaign for future-oriented framework conditions for cycling.
